Definition of Dental Crowns:
A dental crown (also known as a dental cap) is one of the dental restoration techniques that will keep your teeth healthy. Using dental crowns, our experts will place an artificial crown – the externally visible part of the tooth seen above the gum line – to protect your tooth from further damage and restore natural appearance, strength, and function.
When to Use Dental Crowns?
Our dental professionals may recommend the use of dental crowns after evaluating your tooth, especially if you need:

First: Permanent Crowns:
There are several types of permanent dental crowns based on the material used in their manufacturing process, including
1- Metal crowns: gold, platinum, palladium, and chromium are the most common metals used to make dental crowns. These metals are usually combined to provide the crown with the best chemical and physical properties.
Metal crowns have the following advantages over other types:
- Withstand biting and chewing forces.
- Last long and do not chip or break.
- Not affect the corresponding teeth.
- Preserve natural tooth structure.
Many patients do not prefer metal crowns because of their metallic color. However, it is still a good choice for out-of-sight teeth.
2- All-ceramic or all-porcelain crowns: Currently, there are several types and brands of ceramic crowns. Our dentist will give you all the information you need to know about each one of them. All-ceramic or all-porcelain crowns offer the most natural and aesthetic appearance compared to other types.
Your dentist may suggest this type if:
- You have an allergy to metals used in other crowns.
- A crown is needed to protect your front teeth.
Compared to other types, ceramic crowns may affect and damage the corresponding teeth, may be at risk of cracking or fracture, and require removal of a more natural dental structure to achieve adequate crown strength.
- 3- Porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns: This type of dental crown consists of a metal part that forms the inside surface of the crown, cemented to the tooth, and a porcelain part covering the metal part. The combination of metal and porcelain materials gives this type some advantages over others:
- Durability and the ability to withstand biting and chewing forces.
- Aesthetic appearance by matching the natural tooth color.
- Suitability for front and back teeth.
The outer layer of porcelain shares some of the disadvantages of all-ceramic crowns by wearing down opposing teeth, being at risk of cracking and fracture, in addition to the possibility of the appearance of the metal part with receding gums.
4-Pressed ceramic crowns:
Another option is a pressed ceramic crown; this type has a porcelain outer covering with a hard inner surface made from pressed ceramic.
The addition of a pressed ceramic core will make this type more durable compared to all-porcelain crowns while maintaining the aesthetic appearance and natural tooth color through the porcelain outer layer.
- Second: Temporary Crowns:There are two main types of temporary crowns:
1- Stainless steel crowns:
Stainless steel crown is a common choice in pediatric dentistry. However, for adult patients, the dentist will make a temporary stainless steel crown to protect the tooth and gums during the time needed to make a permanent crown.
2- All-resin crown: This temporary crown option preserves the aesthetic appearance of the teeth, and thus many patients prefer it to stainless steel. All-resin crowns are not a good choice for permanent crowns as they are made of resin, which is short-lived and cannot withstand biting and chewing forces.
Dental Crown Procedure:
1- Initial Assessment:
Infinity Smiles dental specialists are well experienced in making an accurate diagnosis regarding the need for crown restoration after a brief and thorough oral assessment that may include a dental X-ray. Candidates for crown treatment then undergo the procedure of crown preparation and cementation.
2-Tooth Preparation:
A crown procedure usually requires two visits to the dental clinic. During your first visit, your dentist will:
- Get an impression of your tooth to make the temporary crown.
- Prepare and reshape your tooth to ensure a uniform crown thickness while preserving the natural tooth structure needed to support the crown. Some patients may not have enough natural tooth structure due to the large size of dental decay, fracture, or root canal treatment. In such cases, the dentist will make an artificial core to fill the tooth and provide adequate support for the crown. Ordinary dental filling materials such as amalgam, glass ionomer, or composite resin can be used to make the artificial core.
3-Permanent Crown Preparation:
After preparing the tooth and getting it in the required shape:
- The dentist will get an impression and send it to the dental lab to make your permanent crown.
- You will use a temporary crown to protect your tooth and gums until you have the permanent one.
- The dentist will schedule another appointment for the permanent crown cementation.
4-Permanent Crown Cementation:
A few days later, your permanent crown will be ready, and during your second visit, the dentist will check the suitability of your dental restoration (crown) and make sure it fits perfectly on your tooth.
Once you and your dentist are satisfied with the result, the dentist will use a special dental cement to fix the crown permanently on your tooth.
5- After the Procedure:
- Your dental crown can last at least five years and as long as 15-20 years.
- Try to avoid hard and sticky foods that may affect the life of your crown.
- Maintain good oral hygiene by brushing and flossing your teeth daily.
- Our dentist will show you the proper flossing technique using a special floss (SUPER FLOSS) to clean the areas between your crown and your natural teeth.
